phone VS face-to-face?
Unlike many other ‘helping’ services, coaching is very effective when delivered over the phone. Many people find this hard to believe and are hesitant to try phone coaching, but Kerryn often jokes about never getting clients back into her office after they've had their first phone session... even when they live in the next suburb! This preference for phone coaching happens for several reasons: 1. For many coaching clients, time is of the essence. Therefore, it saves time to pick up the phone, rather than drive to your coach’s office for a session. 2. The more honest you can be in coaching, the more you get out of it and sometimes it’s easier to be 100% honest, when you don’t have your coach sitting right in front of you looking at you. This is especially the case when dealing with sensitive issues. Plus, people feel comfortable in their own homes/offices and are more likely to be more honest, when they are feeling comfortable. 3. When you have coaching over the phone, you get the unique balance of itimacy and distance with your coach. This is very important to the success of coaching. Without a certain degree of distance, it is hard for your coach to listen effectively, hold you accountable and challenge you where necessary. Yet despite a professional distance, itimacy is maintained, because you tell your coach things you have never shared with anyone else. Plus, your coach comes to know and appreciate all your desires, your values and the things you think about but never say. Kerryn coaches clients both by phone and face-to-face. She has national and international clients she has never met face-to-face, while coaching SELF-retreat participants and locals face-to-face in the Byron (Bay) shire, Gold Coast Hinterland and in Brisbane.
